Curriculum Statement
At Old Buckenham Primary School, the curriculum is at the core of our school vision because we know its importance in contributing to our children’s success in life.
At Old Buckenham Primary School, every child is given the opportunity to flourish academically, socially and emotionally. Our broad and balanced curriculum inspires our children to be curious, resilient learners who embrace challenge with confidence. Rooted in our core values of respect, teamwork, communication, honesty, resilience and achievement, and underpinned by kindness, we nurture a community where diversity and individuality are celebrated.
We explicitly teach, model and embed these values through our curriculum so that our children develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge they need to adapt, succeed and thrive in an ever-changing world.
INTENT – What are we trying to achieve with our curriculum?
Old Buckenham Primary School is committed to delivering the National Curriculum while going beyond its expectations. Our curriculum is designed to be relevant, meaningful and inspiring for all learners, ensuring that knowledge and skills are built progressively over time.
We want our children to have a deep understanding of the place in which they live, developing a strong sense of pride in their local town and county. Our curriculum enables them to make meaningful connections within their community while also broadening their experiences beyond their immediate village. Through carefully planned educational visits and real-life opportunities, pupils are given the chance to explore new places, deepen their understanding and engage with the wider world.
Our intent is rooted in our values. We aim to develop children who:

Above all, we want children to enjoy learning. Our curriculum is designed to engage and excite through hands-on experiences, creativity and purposeful learning opportunities, enabling every child to flourish both as an individual and as a learner
IMPLEMENTATION – How do we deliver our curriculum?
Our curriculum is delivered through high-quality teaching that considers the needs of all learners. Our values are lived through everyday practice in the classroom.
We promote teamwork and collaboration through structured opportunities for discussion, shared learning and peer support. A strong emphasis on communication enables pupils to articulate their thinking, ask questions and deepen their understanding.
Teachers embed a growth mindset, encouraging children to show resilience, learn from mistakes and approach challenges positively. Regular revisiting and reviewing of key knowledge ensures that learning is retained over time.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced, with clear progression in knowledge and skills across all subjects and year groups. Cross-curricular links are made where appropriate, allowing children to apply their learning in different contexts.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, enabling pupils to access all areas of learning. We prioritise daily reading and the development of language and vocabulary.
Through high expectations and consistent practice, we support all pupils to achieve their potential in a nurturing and respectful environment grounded in kindness.
IMPACT – How do we know our curriculum is working?
We measure the impact of our curriculum in a range of meaningful ways, ensuring that it continues to evolve to meet the needs of our learners.
We actively seek the views of pupils, parents and staff, valuing their feedback in shaping our curriculum. Pupil voice reflects the extent to which our children feel confident, engaged and supported in their learning.
Regular pupil progress meetings with senior leaders include discussion of assessment data, targets, work scrutiny and classroom observations. These help us to ensure that all children are making progress and achieving well.
Assessment through quizzes, retrieval practice and ongoing formative assessment enables us to evaluate how well pupils are remembering key knowledge and applying their skills.
By the time children leave Old Buckenham Primary School, they will have experienced a rich and varied curriculum. They will be confident, respectful and resilient individuals who communicate effectively, work well with others, act with honesty and kindness, and are fully prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
